Even the best cared for lawns can have the occasional problem with weeds. If you’re having problems, read on and discover how All Green Lawn Treatments can help.
What is a weed?
A weed is any uncultivated plant growing where it isn’t wanted. Generally, the only thing that you want growing in your lawn is grass, so anything else will need to be removed. If you just have the odd weed, it may be possible to remove them individually by hand. Frustratingly though weeds often seem to flourish much better than the plants you want, and a more thorough method of removal will be needed.
But controlling weeds in your lawn mounts a particularchallenge. Namely you want to kill the weeds without killing the grass around them. This makes weed control more difficult as you can’t just ‘blitz’ the weeds as you may be able to do to weeds growing for example on patios or drives.
Perennials vs annuals
Just like other plants weeds may be annuals or perennials.
Annuals are plants that go through their entire life cycle – germinating, flowering, setting seed and dying – within a year.Annuals tend to produce lots of seeds as this is the only way that they can return the next year.
Perennials on the other hand live for 2 years or more. These types of weeds have strong roots systems, and it’s from these root systems that the weeds will grow the next year. As you can imagine it is important to kill the root systems of perennial weeds in order to successfully eliminate them.
What are the most common types of lawn weeds?
There are many weeds that you may find in your lawn. Some of the most easily recognisable are daisies, dandelions and white clover. If you just have one or two daisies, and act quickly, you may be able to remove them by hand, but as all these weeds are perennials you will probably need to talk to your lawncare professional about a more permanent solution. Dandelions have a particularly long and strong taproot, so while you may be able to remove the visible weed, more weeds will grow from this root.
Other weeds you may find on your lawn include creeping buttercup, plantain, bird’s foot trefoil and creeping thistle. Different weeds need treating differently and so it is very important that weeds are identified correctly before having them treated.
When to treat them?
The timing of weed killer application depends on severalfactors. The most effective time is when weeds are in their fast-growing stage – which is one of the reasons it is important to identify them correctly. This isn’t the only consideration though. You also need to think about things like when you last mowed the lawn, when you last applied fertiliser and what the weather has been like. In terms of the weather, weed killer is most effective when the soil id damp, but not wet, and you ideally want it applied at a time when no heavy rain is forecast. It also isn’t advisable to apply weedkiller on ground that is either frozen or scorched.
This is a lot to consider, which is why so many people find All Green Lawn Treatments’ year-round lawn treatment planthe easiest way to keep weeds under control.
Why use a professional?
Apart from the fact that you’ll know that weed killing treatments are being carried out at the correct time, there are other reasons for using a lawncare professional.
The weed killers (herbicides) used to treat weeds effectively contain strong chemicals that can be dangerous if not used correctly. When you ask a professional to treat your lawn you can be sure that they will use these chemicals safely – even when they are using weed killers that are strong and more effective than the products available to the general public.
You’ll also be confident that they won’t damage your lawn, and will be able to offer additional treatments and services that will complement weed control to get your lawn looking its best. Contact All Green Lawn Treatments today to find out how your lawn can be weed-free all year round.
